FREE on NOOK and Kindle: Sixteen Brides by Stephanie Grace Whitson

Sixteen Brides
*I just found out that this book is free for NOOK, Kindle and Sony ereader. I'm not sure how long it will last so go check it out. I read the book last year and the review is listed below.

Remember you don't need a NOOK or Kindle to read these books. You can read them on your computer or your phone.

From the publisher, Bethany House:   In 1872, sixteen Civil War widows living in St. Louis respond to a series of meetings conducted by a land speculator who lures them west by promising "prime homesteads" in a "booming community." Unbeknownst to them, the speculator's true motive is to find an excuse to bring women to the fledgling community of Plum Grove, Nebraska, in hopes they will accept marriage proposals shortly after their arrival!
Sparks fly when these unsuspecting widows meet the men who are waiting for them. These women are going to need all the courage and faith they can muster to survive these unwanted circumstances--especially when they begin to discover that none of them is exactly who she appears to be.

MY TAKE ON THE BOOK:  What a great read! I love historical fiction.  The author beautifully told a story of life for women after the Civil War.  Many with whom lost their husbands due to the War.  The custom was that women were not to be alone, couldn't take care of building a home or having a hard labor job.  This group of women showed the men in this new town that they could take care of their own business and that they didn't need to be a bride unless they chose to be one.  Of course, over half the group were thrilled to come into a town and get married right away.  They needed that comfort of having a mate right away.
The author was doing research for another book when she ran across a headline "Another cargo of war widows arrived..." which was just the spark needed to get this book going. She took on 5 women's stories and wove them into a delightful read!  I definitely recommend this for Young Adult and up (13 and older) and will have my daughters read this book.
