I have read quite a few of these the past year and each one brings new joy! I started reading these to make sure that they were OK for my young teens to read. Silly teens have yet to pick up the books to read! My teens are homeschooled so I am going to incorporate one of these into our literature class in a few months. Here is the newest book in my collection of mish mash monster!!!
Jane and the Damned by Janet Mullany
Book Description:
• Paperback: 304 pages
• Publisher: Avon A (9/28 2010)
• Publisher: Avon A (9/28 2010)
In 1797, when aspiring novelist Jane Austen becomes one of the Damned, the beautiful, fashionable, sexy vampires of Georgian England, her family insists she takes the waters at Bath, the only known cure. But the city becomes a blood bath when the French invade and the Damned are the only ones who can overthrow the French and save England. Jane now regards her creation as a vampire as a gift. She rejects the cure and discovers a world of freedom, love, and adventure as a vampire. But as an immortal, she loses her ability to write and must sever ties with her beloved sister Cassandra and the rest of her family. Under the shadow of the guillotine, Jane will have to decide whether eternal life and love are too high a price to pay for the loss of what means most to her as a mortal.
My Take on the Book: I was so happy to be included in this book tour! This book fits perfectly in the mish mash monster genre! I am a huge fan of Jane Austen and LOVE reading any and all books she has written as well as books others have written about her and her as a character. I'm a huge movie junkie, too!
For this book, I was shocked that Jane became a vampire! Haha, not really! In a way I was shocked that it happened so quickly in the book! From that point on, the book never slowed down! It truly is a quick page turner and I was able to read the book in a few sittings!
I have a really bad habit of reading before bedtime. When I do that I dream at night about the book. This one was no exception! I had many sweet dreams from this one! I went to bed thinking Jane Austen and woke up doing just the same. IF you are a Jane Austen fan then you will love this book! IF you are not a Jane Austen fan then you will love this book! This, of course, is my opinion. I do have some friends who do not like this mish mash monster genre but really, it is all in fun and really brings more attention back to the classics! If you had to start with one book in this genre, this would be a great place to start!
The author, Janet Mullany, kept true to the character of Jane Austen! I love the Austen-era where men stand up and take notice when a woman walks into the room. This book had me chuckling many times especially when Mz. Prime and Proper Vampire Jane walks into a room and no one even looked up at her. Outrageous! Unspeakable! Really, this book is full of fun and humor.
This is my first mish mash monster book that I have read written by a woman! Not saying that it should matter but for some reason it gave the feel of this book a much more delicate-Jane-the-Vampire feel. I'm not sure how to put it into words and I know that I'm not doing the book justice but I really think that is what made this book so warm and inviting! The ending surprised me and I'm still, days later, thinking about it. I am going to reread this book in a few weeks to see what I think of it the 2nd time. I have a feeling that this book will get read many times! The author pulled magic out of her hat with this book!
I can't wait to read more writing by Janet Mullany! I wonder what work she has planned next! Please write more of this genre! If you stop in, can you give us any hints??
Here is her bio! Maybe you should read the book and then ask her a few questions! Her contact info is below!

I just heard about this book yesterday and am excited to read it now that you've given it such a good review! I've been loving those mash ups too and agree that teens might appreciate the classics more if they get to read these versions as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great review and I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteHow funny that you read these to approve them for your kids and they haven't even picked one up yet! LOL I love the idea of incorporating these kinds of books into your schooling efforts - they should bring about some ... interesting ... discussions. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for being a part of the tour!
