I just recently found out that October is Adopt-A-Dog month! How wonderful! I hope that this month brings a lot of attention to Animal Shelters and that dogs get adopted. It makes me sad to see pets discarded and left behind in shelters. I know that we have a wonderful no kill shelter in our area. They do great things for the pets in their care. Are you looking to adopt a dog this month?
Are you a dog fan? Thanks to Hachette Book Group I have a 5 books to offer one reader! Here are the books and a bit about them:
Oogy By Larry Levin
In the bestselling tradition of Rescuing Sprite comes the story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted. In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen--one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue--ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy's charms, and decided to take him home.
Heartwarming and redemptive, OOGY is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him "Oogy" (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.
GOD AND DOG is a phenomenon. First appearing on YouTube, the video of Wendy Francisco's charming animated illustrations and moving song tells of the unconditional love of both God and Dog.
With over 2 million YouTube viewings to date, Francisco's story appeals to all ages, to animal enthusiasts, to people of religious persuasions, and especially to anyone who has been loved by a dog.
Now in book format, Wendy's touching narrative will be expanded on through additional lyrics, illustrations, photographs and some of the powerful mail that is continually being sent to Francisco.
A German Shepherd police dog witnesses a murder and if his owner--an Iraq war vet and former cop-turned-thief--is convicted of the crime, the dog could be put down. Few rival Andy Carpenter's affection for dogs, and he decides to represent the poor canine. As Andy struggles to convince a judge that this dog should be set free, he discovers that the dog and his owner have become involved unwittingly in a case of much greater proportions than the one they've been charged with. Andy will have to call upon the unique abilities of this ex-police dog to help solve the crime and prevent a catastrophic event from taking place.
For nearly a quarter century, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend has been the standard against which all other dog-training books have been measured. This new, expanded edition, with a fresh new design and new photographs throughout, preserves the best features of the original classic while bringing the book fully up-to-date. The result: the ultimate training manual for a new generation of dog owners - and, of course, for their canine best friends. The Monks of New Skete have achieved international renown as breeders of German shepherds and as outstanding trainers of dogs of all breeds. Their unique approach to canine training, developed and refined over three decades, is based on the philosophy that "understanding is the key to communication, compassion, and communion" with your dog. The importance of honest and effective communication with your dog is underscored throughout this guide, especially in the practical training exercises: a detailed, comprehensive, fully illustrated obedience course through which the monks lead you (and your dog) step-by-step. How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend covers virtually every aspect of living with and caring for your dog, including: Selecting a dog (what breed? male? female? puppy or older dog?) to fit your lifestyle Where to get - and where not to get - a dog Reading a pedigree Training your dog or puppy - when, where, and how The proper use of praise and discipline Feeding, grooming, and ensuring your dog's physical fitness Recognizing and correcting canine behavioral problems The particular challenges of raising a dog where you live - in the city, country, or suburb The proper techniques for complete care of your pet at every stage of his or her life In this new edition, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend has been expanded to encompass the latest equipment (e.g., retractable leashes, "invisible" fences); new trends in training and care (doggy day care, professional dog walkers, etc.); and dozens of new anecdotes and case studies, drawn from the monks' own experience, that bring to life the essential training concepts. In its scope, its clarity, and its authority, How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend remains unrivaled as a basic training guide for dog owners. Like no other book, this guide can help you understand and appreciate your dog's nature as well as his or her distinct personality - and in so doing, it can significantly enrich the life you share with your dog.

When we were newlyweds my hubby brought home a puppy that he passed by every day in a pet store window. She was repeatadly marked down until he could stand it no longer. She was with us for 14 years until she passed away...rip Pookie!

Oh no, don't tell me this! We were thisclose to adopting a dog last week and lost him to someone who already had an approved application on file. I'm still not 100% sold on the idea of getting a dog even though I love them, but our cats might have a different opinion.
ReplyDeleteI take in rescues. My dog right now, is a malamute. I took her in almost a year ago. She weighed 30 pounds, and was a year old. She was kept in a small cage and not ever taken out. She has put on weight and is up to normal weight now. Unfortunately, she has developed hip dysplasia, so she is in pain alot now.

I am most excited to read how to be your dogs best friend.

I don't have a dog because I have two cats. Both my son and daughter have dogs and I spend lots of time with them and my grandchildren. I know that dogs love to go for walks and that walking is great exercise for me.

My dog is truly amazing. There has been research done recently on how dogs can detect cancer. Well, a few years ago, our black lab would not take her head off my husband's abdomen. He had been ill and while undergoing tests, he mention ed she did this. Doctors repeated his CT scan and found pancreatic cancer. They caught it so early and my husband was so lucky. Needless to say, she is spoiled rotten and we love her dearly. Kkrasowski at comcast dot net

I am retired and really don't have the energy to keep up with a dog but I have 4 cats. I love dogs and I had a St Bernard we named Ally Oop. He was so loving and if he could get into your lap he would. All 125 lbs. lol He was so gentle and when we had kittens they would crawl all over him and when he was ready to get up he would gently shake them off and walk away. He was hit by a car at 9 1/2 yrs old and I still miss him after30 yrs.

I just love Katie. I can see her now running up and down the halls to check up on the neighbors. She was able to bring all these people together with her friendship.

Oogy, What can I say other than I just love him. He reminds me of a bull dog we had named Bugg. Oogy maynot have been the best looking dog but he had a heart of gold and the Levin family saw that and knew when they adopted him he would be a special family pet.

I have a Chihuahua Terrier named Chiquita. She is a rescue from Puerto Rico...her family moved and left her in the bathroom. Everytime I look at her sweet little face, I cannot fathom how they could have done that. :(

I always had a dog growing up, but then I've had cats in my older life...I know dogs are more fun to "play with" than cats, and they love to ride in cars.
