My Take on the Book:  Do you know the song "Amazing Grace?" If so, this song resonates through out this book with the main character, Esther.  The first verse of this song is "Amazing Grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me... I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see."  The author didn't mention this hymn but it is one that came to my mind as I read the book. 

This book is set at the end of WWII and focuses in on Esther who is lost.  She is lost in her own sin and it consumes her every day life.  She became an unwed mother, the father is in the War and she is living with his family who isn't happy with her.  She is a nurse who works endless hours caring for soldiers from the war.   During all this time she struggles with her thoughts on if she even wants him to return and yet needing him to return to meet his daughter.  She gets news that he is probably dead and then strikes up a beautiful letter writing conversation with the soldier who share the news with her.  It is through this correspondence that helped her see where her strength and forgiveness needs to come from.  


I enjoyed this book a lot. I loved the song that was woven throughout the book that was written by Sarah May Warren as well as quotes from the hymn, A Mighty Fortress is Our God, which is one of my favorite hymns.  The historical references were very vivid and strongly woven throughout the book.  This is book 2 in the series.  I never read book 1 but plan to soon. This is truly a stand alone book.   I would love to read more books with these characters from this point on to see where their life took them.  I have read quite a few of the author's books and have the others on my wish list to read.
