Giveaway: You Can Do A Graphic Novel Book *3* WINNERS

You Can Do a Graphic Novel
Imagine sitting down with pencil and paper to create a colorful, captivating graphic novel that might one day become a box-office hit, like Watchman or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Whether age six or 96, anyone can create a graphic novel and get a piece of the $395 + million graphic novel market with help from the new book You Can Do a Graphic Novel (ISBN: 9781592579556, Alpha Books, January 2010, $19.95).

Veteran graphic novelist and graphic novel instructor Barbara Slate guides readers through the same process she learned in her early days working for Marvel and DC Comics—a process she has simplified for the classes she teaches and for the syndicated column she writes.

The book teaches readers how to:

• Uncover the components of a good graphic novel
• Find a drawing style regardless of artistic ability
• Navigate the creative process and create memorable characters
• Develop the plot and subplots and come up with compelling dialogues
• Understand the ins and outs of graphic-novel layout
• Traverse the graphic-novel business

Scraps of Life Book Club: What an awesome book. My 12 year old is a budding author so this is a book she enjoyed very much. She isn't much of an artist (in her opinion) so this book gave her tips and step-by-step guide on how to actually draw and match it up to your writing. The book did a great job going through the creative process to help create characters and develop a plot which is perfect for any budding novelist.

Here are the chapters in the book: Your Story; Draw, Draw, Draw; The Creative Process; The Creative Block; Creating Characters; The Plotline; Writing; Layout; Finishes; Some Student's Work; The Biz; Glossary

I loved the "pop quizes" throughout the book. This was done in a fun way to make sure the book wasn't "school work" and tested the reader on what they read. The author also offers online one-on-one workshops to teach you how to do a graphic novel.

I'd recommend this for any middle school/high school student who loves to draw and create stories. This would also make a great addition to any homeschool curriculum.

  9. This book looks so good, I'll probably buy a copy for my stepson, even if I win one! I would like to have this for my son, who is 5, as he grows. He already likes to draw, and I'd love to see him make history graphic novels based on his lessons, as well as make up his own stories! I think graphic novels would be a great way to teach story writing. I even put the book on my Amazon wish list!
