Christmas Star Cookies {Healthier Holiday Treats}

We love making cookies at Christmas. These Christmas Star Cookies are great to have at home when guest stop in or to giveaway as gifts. We also make these for our Christmas Open House each year. Christmas Star Cookies

This is one of our traditional family recipes. You can personalize it but using different shaped cookie cutters and different sprinkles. Best part of this recipe that from start to finish the kids can help with ever step.

Christmas Star Cookies

Ingredients

1 cup white sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1/4 cup butter
2 egg yolks
1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 cup buttermilk
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 cups flour

Directions

1-Cream together sugar and shortening.
2-Slowly add in egg yolks and rest of wet ingredients and cream together.
3-Combine dry ingredients and slow add to wet ingredients. Mix until combined.
4-Separate dough into 2 pieces and wrap in plastic wrap. Keep in fridge for 2 hours up to over night before baking.
5-Roll out dough on a well floured surface to 1/4 inch thick. 
6-Cut out with cookie cutters.
7-Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 5-8 minutes. They should still look white on top and light tan on the bottom. These are a soft cookie.
8-Remove off cookie sheet onto baking rack to cool.
9-Frost with white frosting and decorate with sprinkles. 
10- Let frosting harden and then store in container.

Recipe yields approximately 50 cookies depending on the size.

White Christmas Cookie Frosting

Ingredients


2 cups powdered sugar
2 teaspoons Crisco
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
pinch of salt
1/4 teaspoon hot water (approx. use to thin frosting to a nice spreading consistency)



Directions 


1-In mixing bowl add crisco, egg, vanilla, salt and small amount of hot water.  
2-Slowly add in powdered sugar and then water to make it a frosting consistency.  
3-Use on cookies and decorate with sprinkles.  
4-Let frosting dry before storing cookies.  
5-I use parchment paper in between layers of cookies.
